Its not going to replace my DSLR by any shot but boy is it ever good for its size. Once again another Full Featured camera. The Canon S95 has a 3.8x optical zoom (28mm-105mm, very classic), it has HDR, Macro, Miniaturization (FUN), High Sensitivity HS, Vivid, Jpeg +Raw.... the list goes on but I wont bore you with SPECS because that's not my thing for this blog!!!
I just like getting straight to some images and hopefully they can inspire you into considering this camera as the camera for you!!!

An interesting technique which has become very popular in the last few years is HDR (High Dynamic Range). Many manufactures are now including this feature in-camera.... Some do it whilst you are shooting and some do it post shooting during editing. The Canon Powershot's do it whilst shooting... Here are two images shot at the same time etc.. one in HDR mode and the other shot in Program mode. Hopefully you can all see the change in the shot!
I always try to sneak in a little learning snippet with these entries... So this is my snippet!! Below, I have two shots of the same situation shot with the same settings in the same mode but with one thing changed on the camera to help change the result of the image.
Now this change is only really possible when your closer to the subject. The flash was the feature I added. with these compact cameras the ideal distance for the on-board flash is really 10ft-ish... If your subject is any further away the flash is unlikely to have much effect unless of course your ISO is set to a high setting...
Both are very acceptable images but I really wanted you to see the real pink that the tree had produced, the cloud and blue sky just adds to the richness of the shot.
So the lesson of the day is sometimes try using the flash to see what effect you can create in your shot! Also the previous Macro shot of the Dandelion was also used with flash. Had I not of used it the dandelion would have been extremely dark and almost silhouetted.....
Here again is a shot where both scenarios work and a lot of cameras would not flash in this situation so having control over it from time to time is a good option...
The New HS system seems to provide excellent low light shots within the parameters of these small sensors. Its quite remarkable what they have been able to achieve in a short space of time.
They have really been able to reduce the NOISE of the files and make the sensors react very much like how film grain would have produced.... so the image may not appear as sharp but you have a nice grain warmth to it.
The shot below was shot in my garage under terrible lighting but I also custom white balanced from my little white deep freezer that is there. As you can see the Auto is good but Custom gets it right, right out of the camera!!! It is worth the 3-5 seconds to do it and in a situation like that where the light source isn't changing I could have shot all day in there with the Custom Balance and all the images would have been amazingly consistent!
Here's just a few more pics I thought I would share.
These two are the fun "Miniature" mode.
As always all these shots have not been edited, only re-sized for the Blog so as to load faster for easier viewing.
Hopefully we'll see you shortly in one of our stores, or buy it Online
